What makes you the best candidate for Ethics Committee Assistant?:
They don't tell you about the smell when you're out in the field. They don't tell you about the fear, the confusion in their eyes when you're telling them it's going to be just fine while wiping their memories. They don't tell you about the emotions you feel while you make a family forget that their son, brother, husband ever existed.

Sometimes you feel like a monster, you feel like the bogeyman coming to snatch away the feelings of these unsuspecting people. It's for the greater good, you tell yourself. The ends justify the means. While that may be true, it still doesn't make it any easier. You want to talk to me about ethics? You learn real quick about 'Ethics' when you're staring into the eyes of a Mother who's about to forget that her child felt any pain.

There was this one job we went on, don't want to get into the specifics but an anomaly popped out in the middle of a busy shopping centre during peak shopping hours. It was a massacre. 26 casualties before we arrived to the scene and could lock it down. It came down to me to decide the fate of these people who had witnessed everything. I had to make the call. Over 3000 people witnessed the scene today, and we couldn't just pin it on something trivial, like a movie being filmed. Full memory wipe for everyone that witnessed the event. A gas cloud of Class-A Amnestics for everyone present at the scene. My subordinates argued, saying it would've been easier to 'terminate' those there as there would be less paperwork.

Took us 3 days to properly clean up the mess, but it made me realise something. Those who get the privilege of being stationed at one of our containment sites or research outposts talk about ethics like it's just a theory, pure paperwork and policies. A roadblock for the things they want to do. But to me, ethics is what you do when nobody is watching. When you have the option to do something easy, but choose to do the hard thing anyway.

Great story, but why is that relevant to the question being asked of you?

I've seen the truth. I've been in the shadows of where the O5's "acceptable losses" become real casualties, not just statistics. I've seen their policy decisions destroy families. Where their efforts to contain become parents who don't even remember their own children. From everything you've told me, [REDACTED], The Committee acts as a check on power. The thing that stops the Foundation from becoming the thing they're trying to contain.
I've had experience in a CL4 role prior, and have had a plenitude of experience in managing departmental relations and keeping a team in check. The role of the assistant is to create roleplay for the wider Foundation, the first point of contact for the Committee. I feel as if my prior experience lends me an advantage in that.

What are the responsibilities of Ethics Committee Assistants in RP?:

So Henry, what do you think the assistants do?

I see those freaks running around the site constantly, [REDACTED]. Always with an entourage of heavily armed men, always with a gleam of suspicion in their eye. You see them hangin’ with the ISD most times, keepin’ a watchful eye on what bullshit they spew to the unsuspecting researcher who’s just doing his job. It’s kind of weird, whenever they’re around the ISD they almost piss themselves. I’ve gathered that they uphold the law around here, kinda hard not to notice when the ISD can’t keep their shit together when they're watchin’.

What if I told you that there’s more to that story than you think?

I’m listenin’.

Those ‘freaks’ you speak of are Assistants to the Ethics Committee.

Yeah yeah, funny joke [REDACTED]. Ain't those the busybodies that sit at a desk, talking about change but don't do jack shit? You ever heard that joke, [REDACTED]? Y’know, the one that goes “how many members of the committee does it take to change a lightbulb?” There’s no way that those assistants, with the aura of respect that they give off, belong to the committee.

Oh Henry. I don't blame you for being misinformed, it's our fault. You see, The assistants make our job easier. It’s easier to have them be our eyes and ears, opposed to revealing the true purpose of the Committee.

You're freakin’ me out [REDACTED]. What do you mean by ‘true purpose’.

You ever heard of Overwatch Command, the O5 Council? Shit, you’d know them as the ‘Site Inspectors’. We keep them in check. We make sure that what they do justifies the means of the Foundation. Secure, Contain, Protect. That’s our mantra. The researcher that decides that SCP-096 should be used against our enemies, we keep them in line. The janitor that decides that he could make a fortune selling our ‘assets’ to the Insurgency, we know before he makes a move. That doctor that is using SCP-500 to cure unnecessary ailments, we had her memory wiped. So you see, Henry, we’re much more than busybodies.

Our assistants keep the true story hidden. They’re our eyes and ears, our hand-reached out so to say. The first point of contact for the wider Foundation and us.

What the fuck, [REDACTED]. Why are you tellin’ me this? Are you trying to get me killed?

That’s not even half the story, Henry.
