I'm applying for Executive because I decided it's about time. I've played this server for 3 years now and Research was my first department. Despite being my first, I always find myself returning here every few months. I've always danced around the idea of going for Executive but never quite thought I would make a good fit or would positively impact the department as a whole, however I believe I'm currently in a position where I could do good for the department and ranked personnel within it. I do have a great care for the department and it is no secret that it has been down in the dumps for a little bit, but as of Penny and Maxo's tenure as Directors it has really picked itself up again. This is not to say it is without flaw, as there are still issues, but I'd like to assist in bringing the department back to its prime.
What makes you suitable for Executive Researcher?:
- Activity
I'm extremely active online, especially within the server, however I am also very active within externals such as teamspeak and discord. This not only increases my availability to people but means I will be quick to respond to most on-going situations at any given time.
-Experience
As I said, I've never been an Executive before but I have quite a lot of experience in the research department as a whole. When I first joined the server I was quite drawn to the Research Department as it really is the core of the server. Without research, there's no reason for anything to happen and everything becomes a MilSim. Originally when I played I went by a different name and was a member of a sub-department (a lovely idea at the time, that does not quite have the capabilities to happen nowadays), COG-3. During my time in this specialised department I helped to create and lead many tests that involved a multitude of Juniors.
-Potential RP
Though I do not like to use this as a reason, I am a Game Master. This is not to say my roleplay is superior in any way, it is simply to say that it gives me the ability to create new and interesting RP for the department to be involved in. New members are only interested in the set of available SCPs for so long, after a while they become repetitive and stale for less-creative people. I do not believe that the department should be limited by one's creativity, and as such, I would use the authority and leadership of Executive to help in creating and leading RP in GM SCPs to keep stuff fun and fresh for others.
How many excellent-graded documents have you written? What makes a document excellent?
-In terms of Excellent docs on Thistle, currently 1. But as I said, I've played research on-and-off for essentially my entire 3 years on the server. Over the years I've accumulated a number of Excellents but I do not currently have anything to show for them.
A document earns it's grade based off of formatting, yes, but often I've seen this requirement waived for purely creative works. Documentation and testing is not always limited to gameplay-related functions, it is an RP server and creative writing is heavily encouraged if it is something of interest to the person. I've met a few researchers in my time who have some issues with cross-departmental communication and such but still have a will to be involved in the research department, to these few I recommended creative writing, or performing a test and documenting a, though realistic, different outcome.
Tests are not always going to go to plan, and a lot of the time people do not have plans. Juniors do not often have a want to write documents and so I try to encourage them with a simplified version of things. This doesn't make their document excellent, however, it creates a document where there was none.
All this to say, an excellent grade document is comprised of a few key features:
-Formatting.
(Cover, Index, Aim, Method, Risk, Result, Conclusion and in cases, Applications).
-Creativity.
(Not everything is an "exciting" or "interesting" result, so people are encouraged to have fun with doc writing, it's not a chore!)
-Going beyond.
(This is an umbrella term for all "non-required" topics, such as imagery, detailed descriptions and briefings, extra RP such as post-test medical checkups etc.)
What are the responsibilities of the Executive Researcher in RP?:
An Executive Researcher is expected to carry out a myriad of duties, though a few come from Senior Researcher.
- Guiding and assisting lower clearance Researchers in their tests and methodologies.
- Assisting in the creation of RP for the department.
- Approval of documentation for SCiPNET.
- Being a reliable and approachable member of personnel.
- Carrying the responsibilities of CL4 (Blast door operation, EOC, lights.)
- Performing tests and encouraging others to do so.
- Stepping in when a the Research policy is being actively broken, though ideally with a gentle nudge than an iron fist. (People are more likely to learn from mistakes if they do not feel like they are being shunned for making them. The department's goal is to test, experimentation is natural in all forms, including policies.)
Please give some lore about your Executive Researcher character and what storylines they would be involved in:
