What does this suggestion change/add/remove:
- Add "upgrades" for the cartographer job, attainable by either surface missions (like the hacker/weapon upgrade) or by traveling in the dimension (finding nodes in the dimension that upgrade your anchor, could be found on surface or active SCP chambers?)
- Whether the 22415s can interact with these/be upgraded is up to the devs or content, I know they probably need something too but this was primarily for the cartographers
Upgrades can be for...
---> Improving the speed of deploying the portal + making it quieter (currently it takes like 20 seconds and sound like a jet taking off which makes it impossible to use tactically)
--> Increasing the duration before collapse
--> Make people in the dimension less visible (or completely invisible, perhaps with a drawback like less visibility or something)
--> Increased speed in the dimension or something, you get the idea
Has something similar been suggested before? If so, why is your suggestion different?:

This suggestion ticks some boxes of my idea here but it goes about it in the wrong way, as it asks to make the cartographer a reality bender. I'm just asking for either surface mission upgrade variety OR some added interest in the dimension (REASON TO USE IT) by adding discoverable "nodes" randomly strewn about in the dimension that can be scavenged and used to upgrade your cartographer. Whether this is reset once a day per person or after you die or whatever is up to balancing, I'm not entirely sure since this is the complex way of going about the change - mission upgrades would be easier.
In addition, this suggestion was denied because it "favors combatives," however I must argue that cartography is inherently combative (not to mention the server itself has self admittedly shifted its stance on that since then). The cartographer job is combative on every faction, has the ability to offer significant combat advantages (flanking, bypassing defenses, etc.) and has VERY few RP implications (what if we did x but in a DIFFERENT DIMENSION INSTEAD!?) leading it to be heavily underused for rp.
Possible Positives of the suggestion (At least 2):
- Depending on implementation can add actual reason to explore dimension, perhaps creating the RP or niche intended for the job
- Offers more variety for surface upgrades (currently only weapon + hacker, strictly combative) perhaps motivating more Nu-7 participation
- Makes cartography ACTUALLY USEFUL IN SOME WAY
- CARTOGRAPHER COSTS MONEY SO MORE $$$ FOR VENTZ!
Possible Negatives of the suggestion:
- Obligatory "development time"
- Lag, dimensions probably contribute to more load on server and higher usage of them may not be good
- Can be seen as a "combative push" as the server has been seeing lately, but I think it could motivate actual research, especially if dimensional upgrade nodes are placed in interesting locations like SCP chambers or some shit
Based on the Positives & Negatives, why should this suggestion be accepted:
I'm passionate about this suggestion because cartography is the coolest shit ever added to gmod and it NEVER GETS USED, even the mannequins are criminally underplayed and it's very upsetting. I want the paid cartography jobs to have more agency in their duties but only if they work for it (straight buffs would be obnoxious), whether that means fighting other factions for it (missions) or exploring the dimension. For the larpers who demand that the cartographer be used in some research capacity, I've offered to make it so exploring SCP chambers in the dimension has merit. Although the dev time may be brutal in this case, at least they would be working for a package job, perhaps making it more motivating since there's profit to be had lmao. It's hard to appease everyone but hopefully anyone who likes the cartography feature and paid the $10 for the job can agree that it desperately needs some additions to make it playable in any situation.
