What does this suggestion change/add/remove:

[This suggestion would replace the riot shield with the deployable shield, on the Security Captain role.]


Has something similar been suggested before? If so, why is your suggestion different?:

Possible Positives of the suggestion (At least 2):

[The positives of giving Captains the deployable shield include: the ability to set up checkpoints at points of interest, more strategic advantage when defending dblock or on catwalk, better firing line structure for scp breaches or raids, better coordination with Chiefs/SGTs/SCUs and overall quality of life enhancements. As well as the ability to use both shields together, due to the riot shield being available in the armory already.]


Possible Negatives of the suggestion:

[The only negative I can imagine is the shield being overused possibly, but the Captain role is a whitelisted CL4 role, handpicked by the Chiefs, so I do not believe abuse would be an issue.]


Based on the Positives & Negatives, why should this suggestion be accepted:

[Based on the positives and negatives, I believe this suggestion should be accepted due to the quality of life improvements it will bring, the advantages it will grant Captains during combat or codes, the better synchronization between members of GSD and the overwhelming amount of Security Captains that miss the deployable shield. The deployable shield is an all around upgrade to the currently available riot shield. Everything that you can do with the riot shield, you can do with the deployable shield and more. The fact that SCU/SGT/CoS all have access to the deployable shield but Captains do not, severely hinders us in assisting them in many different situations. I believe this change would be welcome by all of GENSEC and will be seen as an overwhelmingly positive addition.]

its lowkey absurd that gsd sru, scu, sgt, and chief all get deployable shield yet captains dont.

its understandable that, at the beginning of the GSD rework, the shield wasnt given because "the captain loadout (having the tear gas) was already very powerful", but the tear gas nowadays has so few uses that many captains end up rarely using them.

deployable shields however, are extremely useful in holding down d block, sweeps, scp breaches, ci raids, and more. we end up having to ask response units to put shields in places solely because we dont have one ourselves.

hot take: if gsd has 3 jobs with shields below captain then why should captain get a shield when the job can coordinate them to their best use?

that along with what aubrun said, captain never had the shield lol
 
if you believe hard enough that the shield once existed then maybe in our hearts it did 🙏

sure and yes we do but you can apply this to almost every other job and equipment on the server - if you're gonna go down this route you could give 100 examples that fit this description.

also gng have you ever been gsd captain on us server. you ask an sru to put a shield in a specific location and turns out he's actually getting kicked from the server because he decided to block the entirety of pw with his shield. its much less stress to be able to place a shield yourself rather than calling somebody on radio over to catwalk while praying you dont die in the meantime, and then when they refuse to put the shield down because "they want to put it somewhere else" you have to threaten them with a 5 day job ban for insubordination.

your point makes sense but gsd is the hardest group of combatives to coordinate, levels beyond any MTF, and with how spaced out gensec's influence is across the site, if im on catwalk with 2 officers and i want to place a shield down, i'd rather not wait a solid 3-4 minutes. imo its less of a "failure to coordinate" issue and more of a "inability for captains to be independent"

(additionally i have seen loads of lower level GSD get yelled at by admins for bad shield placement - letting an actual leadership job have a shield, one that doesn't only show up once every blue moon, could help show younger GSD how to and how not to use your deployable shield - apart from us having to switch from CPT to SGT during a RCL tryout solely to show the cadets how not to use the new shield)

I must be remembering wrong, I was Captain the first time a few years back but majority of my time was spent as Chief, my mistake, but either way that's the least important aspect of this suggestion. What's important is giving Captains the deployable shield moving forward. If you have feedback on the suggestion itself, that would be appreciated. (y)

Captains currently only have access to the riot shield. Idk if you saw the comment right before your post but I was first Captain over 3 years ago and for majority of my time on civil I was Chief, so my memory may have been slightly off about who had what in the past. Either way, that is the least important aspect of the entire suggestion. What matters is the present and what happens moving forward. Feedback about the suggestion itself would be appreciated.(y)
