Not too long after resigning from Site Administration, Harold started to get into some hard drugs on the side. Not necessarily dealing, as he had also returned to his role as an ISD investigator and wouldn't dare poison the site with such influences but just as a way to keep the excitement flowing- after all, being a CL4 was always invigorating, but the aftermath of resigning and undergoing amnestication always leaves a chip on one's shoulder.
Harold's drug of choice was mainly just cocaine. Always being a fairly straight and narrow man, he stuck to one substance so as not to allow himself to fall any further. To be honest cocaine was fucking amazing but it did lead to a lot of erratic behavior such as unnecessary searches and heightened aggression with suspects, not to mention deciding to utilize ISD equipment to take disguises and meet with dealers in Pinewood from time to time. Eventually his misuse of disguise equipment was uncovered by DEA doing normal rounds on surface when they ran into "Agent Kerald Thawks" wearing DEA garb and sitting alone in the eatery. Unfortunately he only possessed an ISD keycard with his actual name and placing that alongside the cocaine already in his possession there wasn't much he could do to dispute what he had been doing so it was time to face the music. After being returned to the facility in restraints he had two options: Go to rehab or undergo serious amnestication and return to civilian life- options that were only available to him given his extensive service to the Foundation.
Simple enough, he went with option one and took a few months off to get sober. After returning to the internal security department, he chalked it up with everyone else as having taken a sabbatical to focus on "finding himself", though the bags under his eyes and the paranoid personality changes were enough to signal otherwise (and eventually due to his truthful nature he ended up telling folks where he was anyways.) Nevertheless, he was a changed man and his focus was back on the preservation of the Foundation's humanity and survival rather than the bottom of a ziploc bag- though the desire always lingers in the back of his mind.
