Dr. John "Hazard" Burns Introduction

Before his induction into the enigmatic world of the SCP Foundation, Dr. John Burns was a celebrated psychologist with a growing reputation in the field of trauma and abnormal psychology. A prodigy in his youth, Burns earned his doctorate in record time, focusing his research on how individuals process extreme stress and fear. This expertise earned him the nickname “Hazard” among colleagues, as he often delved into cases and environments others deemed too perilous to explore.

Burns’ fascination with human resilience led him to take on work with patients who had survived near-death experiences or had encountered unexplained phenomena. His groundbreaking methods often walked the line between innovation and obsession. It was during one such case—investigating the recurring psychological breakdowns in a small, isolated community—that the SCP Foundation took notice. Though the specifics of the incident remain classified, his ability to extract critical information while maintaining his composure amidst anomalous circumstances marked him as a valuable asset.

Now, as a Foundation psychologist, Dr. Burns is stationed primarily at Site-██, where he serves as both a researcher and a critical support figure for personnel exposed to cognitohazardous or otherwise reality-altering entities. Known for his sharp wit, calm demeanor, and uncanny knack for profiling anomalous behaviors, Burns is an essential part of debriefing field agents and analyzing SCP phenomena from a psychological lens. Despite the grim and often dangerous realities of his work, he approaches each case with a blend of clinical detachment and deep curiosity—a trait that keeps him walking the fine line between understanding anomalies and succumbing to their effects.

Though his colleagues trust his judgment, there’s a quiet unease about the man who seems to understand fear a little too well. Some whisper that “Hazard” isn’t just a nickname; it’s a warning.

**Incident Report: SCP-████ Containment Breach**
*Personnel Involved: Dr. John "Hazard" Burns*
*Date: ██/██/20██*
*Location: Site-██, Containment Wing B*

---

The atmosphere in Site-██ was tense as alarms blared across the facility. SCP-████, an entity classified as a Euclid-level cognitohazard, had breached its containment chamber after a routine experiment went disastrously wrong. The anomaly—a shimmering, shifting mass of fractal-like light—had the peculiar ability to trigger uncontrollable panic and paranoia in anyone who made visual contact with it. Its escape sent the site into lockdown, with personnel scrambling to secure the affected wing.

Dr. John "Hazard" Burns had been in his office reviewing psychological evaluations when the alarms erupted. While others panicked or followed evacuation protocols, Burns did what he always did—he observed. Reports streamed through his terminal: security footage showed SCP-████ moving erratically, drawing people into its influence zone. Once exposed, victims either fled in a blind frenzy or froze in place, consumed by primal terror.

“Doctor, we need to move!” shouted Agent Mallory, one of the site’s security operatives, as she entered his office.

Burns calmly slipped on his jacket. “The anomaly’s radius of influence grows the more it interacts with subjects. How many containment specialists are down?”

“Three. It’s heading toward the main stairwell—if it gets into the lower levels…”

“We’ll lose the entire site,” Burns finished, his voice steady. “I’m going in.”

“What? You’re a psychologist, not containment personnel!”

Burns adjusted his glasses and gave her a wry smile. “That’s precisely why I’m the best candidate. Fear is my specialty.”

---

Burns approached Containment Wing B with deliberate caution, armed with nothing but a recording device and a pair of blackout goggles designed to shield him from SCP-████'s visual effects. Over the radio, Site Command’s voice crackled: “Dr. Burns, this is highly irregular. You’re not authorized—”

“Relax,” he interrupted. “I know what I’m doing. Keep the lights low and ventilation systems running to prevent secondary breaches.”

The goggles limited his vision to an outline of the corridor, but he didn’t need to see SCP-████ to know it was near. The ambient air felt heavy, and the faint sound of whispers—half-formed words in no language he could identify—seeped into his mind.

Then he heard the cries.

Turning a corner, he found Researcher Patel, one of his colleagues, huddled in the fetal position against the wall. The researcher’s breathing was ragged, his hands clawing at his own face as he muttered incoherently. SCP-████ hovered mere feet away, pulsating with a kaleidoscope of sickly colors. Burns knew Patel had already been exposed too long; even if he survived, the mental scars would likely be permanent.

Careful not to look directly at the anomaly, Burns crouched beside Patel, placing a hand on his shoulder. “Patel. It’s Burns. Focus on my voice.”

The man’s rambling slowed, but his eyes remained locked on the entity.

Burns continued, his tone unwavering. “It’s not real. The fear is a construct. Your mind is trying to protect you by overreacting. Close your eyes. You’ve done this before. Remember the breathing exercises I taught you.”

To his surprise, Patel began to respond, his breathing evening out slightly. Burns took this as his chance. He activated the recording device in his pocket, emitting a low-frequency hum designed to disrupt SCP-████'s patterns. The anomaly quivered, its light dimming as it seemed to "notice" him.

“You don’t scare me,” Burns said quietly, his voice carrying an eerie calm.

SCP-████ surged toward him, but he held his ground. As the cognitohazard loomed closer, Burns focused entirely on his breathing, applying the same techniques he had spent years teaching others. The whispers grew louder, the pressure in his skull nearly unbearable, but he didn’t falter. The recording device's interference finally took hold, causing the entity to emit a sharp, discordant noise before retreating into an adjacent containment cell.

“Seal it now!” Burns barked into his comms. Seconds later, the cell’s reinforced door slammed shut, and the airlocks hissed as the chamber was re-secured.

---

Hours later, in the debriefing room, Site Command grilled him over his reckless decision to confront the anomaly.

“You disobeyed direct orders,” the Site Director said, glaring at Burns.

Burns shrugged, sipping his coffee. “And the site’s still standing, isn’t it?”

“You put yourself and others at unnecessary risk.”

“Fear spreads faster than any anomaly,” Burns replied, setting down his cup. “If I hadn’t gone in, half the site would’ve been paralyzed, waiting for a miracle. Sometimes, the best containment tool is someone who understands the mind better than the anomaly does.”

Though his methods remained controversial, no one could deny the results. Dr. John “Hazard” Burns had once again proven why the Foundation kept him around: he wasn’t fearless—he simply knew how to outthink fear itself.

Nearly every single time I play on this server he is online as a Senior Doctor just hanging around in medbay. Definitely a dedicated individual who deserves a shot at being a consultant! However, I believe that shot should be in the future as he is still fairly new to the server with him only coming on this month but he is very promising and someone to keep an eye on.
