What server you were banned on: SCP-RP (USA)

Your in-game name: Kayab Scarpetto

Your SteamID: STEAM_0:1:216808542

Ban Reason: Advertising

Date of ban: May 31, 2026

Who banned you: Voodka

Ban length: Permanent In-Game and Discord (decreased after discord conversation to 2-weeks in-game and permanent discord ban)

What will you do to stop this from happening again: I won’t post links in chats and I will make sure that I am careful where I am posting things so I don’t make that mistake again.

Why should you be unbanned: Dearest Admin,

I am writing this appeal not to deny that I made a mistake and to say that I am very sorry, but to ask that the circumstances, intent, and proportionality of the punishment be reconsidered.

I understand why rules regarding advertising and link sharing exist, and I accept responsibility for mistakenly attempting to post a Discord invite. What I struggle to understand is how a mistake that resulted in no successful post, no actual advertising, and no apparent harm ultimately led to a permanent Discord ban and an accompanying permanent in-game ban without any conversation, clarification, or opportunity to provide context.

The Discord server in question is not a gaming community intended for recruitment or promotion. It is a private server used primarily by close friends, many of whom I know in real life. While I understand why staff would want to investigate the link, conclusions about the nature of the server appear to have been reached without any attempt to clarify my intent or ask for additional context.

I also believe the rule itself leaves room for interpretation:

“1.08 - Link Sharing - Posting any link that contains any virus, IP logging or other details is prohibited, furthermore users are prohibited to share any links or content about any other user(s) personal life without their consent (i.e. posting another players Facebook account in a general channel), furthermore advertisements of any kind, linking to any other gaming community are prohibited.”

The rule does not clearly define where the line exists between advertising and private sharing, nor whether intent and context are considered when determining a violation.

For example, are all links prohibited, or only certain kinds of links? Are private Discord servers treated the same as large public gaming communities? Does software like Medal and Gyazo count? Especially, if it is a video featuring other peoples voices in the background? Do they need to give consent for that to be shared? Where does private sharing end and advertising begin? These distinctions matter because they influence how a rule is understood and followed by the community.

On May 31, 2026 at 23:17 PM, I received the following message from Colby.1:

“Hey Kayab - just going to notify you: Please do not link discords within CN channels - this may be classified as Advertising and lead to bans from the discord.”

Unfortunately, I was offline and did not see this message before further action was taken.

At 23:39 PM, I received a ban notification:

“You were banned from Civil Networks SCP-RP. Reason: Advertising. Moderator: voodka (id: 281656622227652608)”

At 23:50 PM, I received the following message from what I assume to be a different admin by the name of voodka:

“You’ve been permabanned ingame and in Discord for advertising other servers, you can appeal it here: (Link to this forum).”

I responded at 00:28 when I became aware of the situation:

“Hi, um it was a mistake, I was silenced for 24hrs (which I understand was appropriate for my mistake), the link never actually posted in the discord chat, and I realized my mistake right away. However, no one even talked to me before making this very serious decision to permanently ban me or ask what happened. I was never trying to advertise anything, and haven’t done any other actions in the server or in-game to warrant such an extreme reaction. I also don’t appreciate that you creeped the server by joining and then leaving without saying anything. This whole thing could have been avoided if this was dealt with earlier. You could have given me a chance to resolve this without needing to make an official appeal.”

As you can see, I immediately explained that I had made a mistake. I accepted the initial 24-hour silence because I understood I had made a mistake and believed the matter had been addressed. The link never successfully posted thankfully, as I didn’t want to have random people joining the server. I was not attempting to recruit or steal players.

The response I received stated:

“So the ban in Discord is sticking since it happened in Discord. You can still appeal that as well of course. The ban ingame is being reduced to 2 weeks since it’s a different platform within our network altogether. If it had happened ingame it would also be a permanent ban there but it didn’t.

As far as my joining your server, I wanted to make sure what kind of Discord it was before taking any action as I ought to confirm before making such a serious decision.

I apologize for the shock you might have received but regardless advertising in any capacity on our network isn’t ok.”

The response regarding the reduced in-game ban was underwhelming to say the least, and I was still permanently banned from the Discord. I felt as though the admin didn’t really want to hear my side of the situation, it was a mistake, and I felt bad..I was sorry… I truly didn’t mean to. I also found the wording of the last message to be concerning as they “ought to confirm before making such a serious decision” referring to the server link. However, they did act hastily in my opinion and did take serious action without any communication attempt. Guilty until proven innocent I guess. No discretion was used despite this being a first offense involving no malicious intent, and resulting in no successful advertisement being posted.

In conclusion, I believe this issue was handled in a manner that was unnecessarily harsh, and disproportionate to the circumstance. As a result, I respectfully request that the bans put on both my in-game and Discord accounts be reviewed and removed.

Rules are important. Consistency is important. But so are discretion, context, and proportionality.

A permanent ban is one of the most severe punishments available to staff. In my view, such a punishment should be reserved for situations involving deliberate misconduct, repeated behaviour, malicious intent, or actual harm. None of those factors appear to be present here.

Finally, I would like to note the practical impact of this decision. Without access to the Discord, I am unable to continue fulfilling my responsibilities as a Research Executive, a position I had only recently accepted and which depends on Discord access for communication and coordination. The accompanying two-week in-game ban further jeopardizes my ability to fulfill the duties expected of that role.

For these reasons, I respectfully ask that the permanent Discord ban be reconsidered and that the punishment be reassessed in light of the circumstances, intent, and outcome of the incident.

More broadly, I hope staff will reflect on how punishments are standardized, how context is gathered before major decisions are made, and how discretion can be exercised when dealing with genuine mistakes. Communities are strongest not only when rules are enforced, but when enforcement is guided by fairness, integrity, and good judgment.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Appeal Denied

Hi Kayab, thank you for taking the time to submit a ban appeal.

The automatic 24-hour timeout is intended as a preventative measure for further instances of the violation before staff can act on it, and ultimately the matter of the fact is that you had intended on advertising your own server whether or not your message actually went through. We take advertising very seriously which is why your punishment was increased to a permanent ban from Discord and two week in-game ban.
Furthermore, our Discord server's Link Sharing rule is clear enough in that advertising of any kind is prohibited and is not limited to specifically large gaming communities. There is no conflict in the rule for your case.
While I appreciate your honesty and remorse for your actions, I feel it is far too soon to lift either of your bans at this time.

You may re-appeal your in-game ban in one week, and your Discord ban in four weeks.
Additionally, for future reference, please separately submit an appeal here for Discord bans.

Kind regards,
Yellow
