The comms system in its current state is dookie
Cope suggestion incoming

Suggestion core

TLDR
  • The full removal, or at least severe restriction, of message-sending rights of non-CL4 personnel in /c. /c4 and /c5 could stay to prevent metagame of CL4 related things by lower ranks.
  • The full removal of /c1, /c2 and /c3.
  • Content-supported intradepartmental commslines
  • Extension of emergency buttons
Changelog
  • Remove everyone’s send-access in /c which would let everyone read these comms but not send anything in them
  • Give CL4’s and above access to send things in /c
  • Remove /c1, /c2 and /c3
  • While we’re at it, restrict /oc to people who would reasonably have it
  • Add a new feature, where typing /commsname1-commsname2 would send a message from your commsline to the other commsline, for example /isd-a1 would send a [COMMS ISD - COMMS IPD/FISA] message that both departments could see
  • Add a “shutoff” below 40 players where /c is send-all to make communication easier, then re-restrict it above 40 with the IC explanation of “keeping site communications clear when the working day starts”
  • Make emergency buttons more abundant (if possible), along with adding more options, such as:
    • SCP-xxxx reported at [location]
    • MTF-xxx requested at [location]
    • etc.
  • Let CL1’s and CL2’s either use emergency buttons fully, give them panic buttons, or add a “request help” button to emergency buttons that sends out a message along the lines of “assistance requested at [emergency button location]

Has something similar been suggested before?
Not to my knowledge.

Possible Positives of the suggestion
  • Increased amount of roleplay
  • Potentially better communication and more valuable callouts
  • Realism and immersion

Possible Negatives of the suggestion
  • Potentially worse communication
  • Dev time

Based on the Positives & Negatives, why should this suggestion be accepted?
Making /c restricted to just CL4 personnel being able to send messages in it would turn it into an “announcement” comms-line of sorts. Only important messages would get sent there such as SCP callouts, AOS’s, etc.
Additionally, it would force people to do more roleplay with each other to find out what’s going on around the site. Instead of being able to know what’s going on in every corner of the site by reading and typing in /c, you would have to talk to your department via departmental comms, or talk to people vocally and inquire about things.

Communication could either be improved by this (due to callouts becoming more significant if they’re posted in the “announcement” commsline), or be worsened (due to not everyone being able to post in the “announcement” commsline). This is a gamble, I will admit that.

Remember to up or downvote the suggestion, alongside leaving a reply if you want.
