What Ethics Committee role are you applying for, and why?
It must be very strange to see the current Alpha-1 Commander decide to go to Ethics instead of the O5 Council, as is often the case with most A-1 COMs. But the truth is, from the moment I started playing this server, I’ve always preferred Ethics. The openness they have allows such a deeper pool of player interaction and RP to be bounced off of that, as an ECM, (While O1 doesn’t encourage it), I can walk around the site, jump in with small conversations, and check up on the more basic functions. An O5 is limited so heavily by their secrecy, but as an ECM… I can act as the weak middleman, someone who’s awkwardly stumbled themselves into this position and doesn’t fully grasp it. Of course, on the flip side, I could design a character around being some spooky-spy type character, smiles in person, then a dagger in the shadows. The possibilities for characters and the RP that can come from that are… simply far more for Ethics than it is for O5.

That’s not to say I did not debate going for O5, I had character lore all written up for and plans revolving around a storyline all inspired by Remmy’s outstanding work as O5-1. He is one of the reasons why I now want Site Command, what he did as a CL5 holder showed me that while RP can slack here and there, the potential for it as SC is massive, and you can truly suck people into your RP and, as is the case with me, perhaps inspire others to do the same?

Of course, I’ve just yapped on and on about how Remmy inspired me to go for Site Command, but as you can see, it's not O5 that I want. Athena is the main reason behind that. I was an O1 CO under her back when she was ECM around two years ago now, and when she returned as O5-1, I naturally served as her Commander of Alpha-1. Her time as ECM was truly a highlight for me of the server, and perhaps you can call me a reminiscing old fool, but I want to help bring some of that spark back.

I hold no illusions that I am anywhere near the calibre of the two I’ve mentioned above; my talents lie elsewhere, and I acknowledge we all have different strengths. But I can at least try to reach that summit, and if I fall and only manage to grasp the rocky edges, that’ll be enough for me.

As my final point, I’m sure you’ve all noticed I am an extreme yapper just from this very small introduction. I don’t expect anyone but Broda to truly read this, but for those of you that do, I hope the read proves somewhat interesting.

What makes you the best candidate for the Ethics Committee?:
I will begin with the easier answer. Experience, there are few still playing who have been around as long as I, and in as many positions as I. I will concede I am mainly a combative player (Heaven forbid!), but I have held enough non-combative roles that I am certain it will not hold me back.

To list from the most recent, Alpha-1 Commander.

I have been within Alpha-1 for over a year at this point, one of the very few members to have the silver enduring service medal (one whole year, which shouldn’t be a shock considering what I just said). During this time, I have seen CL5s come and go countless times, I have been through about 6 different Councils, and seen how both SCs have changed and evolved. This does trip me up sometimes, I will admit, I assume something, then I realise that changed a year ago, but it allows me to understand the longevity of the server, the people who come and go, and the many things you can learn from the uniqueness that each person holds. I’ve spoken with thousands, conducted minor RP with hundreds, and even had a few major RP with tens. Under my command, and with the help of a very respectable CO team, we have made many positive changes to Alpha-1. Two squadrons directly have me to thank for existing, and while perhaps I have faulted here and there, I have given many hours to their creation and set-up. I have worked on setting up RP with CI regarding the A1/CI COMMs line (Bet you didn’t know that!), and the creation of the Alpha-1 Admin program was started by myself to have A1 COs play a second character as what was more-or-less budget site command when we lacked a council… which has been most of my time as Commander. Finally, and perhaps less RP-focused, I set up the medal system for Alpha-1, revamped the tryout with my now-gone Maj Vinyl and CPT Noble to focus it on more RP matters, and of course, a minor change to CO Taskings, handbooks, more basic boring stuff, you get the picture.

We have many more jobs to go over. Please bear with me, and forgive me, Broda, I imagine you never expected to spend this long on reading an application, but let us continue.

Before Alpha-1, there was my time as an O1 CPT (I’ve decided to skip over all my CI roles because… who cares?), honestly… I cannot speak too much about my time as an O1 CPT; it was so long ago, and my memory is foggy on the matter. I will be truthful and say I was not as focused as I should have been. I enjoyed Omega-1, but during this time, I was made a GM and was also slowly being burnt out over combative roles, as I had previously held Nu-7 LTCOM before going to O1. The transfer, while more enjoyable, was never the full change to keep the server fresh. I fear that if Athena were not as great as she was, I wouldn’t have made it past SGT. But either way, I remained in Omega-1 for about… two to three months? I achieved two medals based on my scouting and the assassination of an O5, but overall, most of my time was spent with general management of a regiment and seeing to the needs of Ethics members, witnessing Athena’s ECM RP was the highlight of that time, and the… as she would call it, “dickswinging” of an ECM was very enjoyable to watch as people cower and scramble to appease; and even if I have no intentions to play an ECM like that, I still appreciate it.

Now, I have one more senior position to go through, one so old that I really… am struggling to pull anything from it. I was Nu-7 LTCOM about… I want to say three years ago? It must be getting close; truthfully, my time as LTCOM was rife with mismanagement. I had joined this server, and Nu-7 by extension, with a serious RP and MILSIM mindset as my previous positions on Arma 3 were a Major spot in a massive regiment. This mindset meant that while my suggestions sounded completely logical and fair on paper, they were designed for a far stricter playerbase and one more accustomed to… well… military, in fact, most of the men I led as a Major were veterans who found the comfort of a similar style to be enjoyable even when out of service. But this ultimately is what meant my time as LTCOM was perhaps… one of the worst LTCOM services ever seen in Nu-7, overly strict, unnecessary bureaucracy, and a focus on duty alone. I was better as a Junior CO, but as LTCOM, I ended up harming the regiment more than helping it.

That is my senior positions done, and perhaps I was a bit too honest, or maybe I am just too critical of myself and hold myself to a higher standard than most. But I recognise my faults, and I strive to fix them, and that is only possible if you can see the faults in the first place.

Great, with that done, Jr. CL4s now… Inspector/Ambassador is the first one. I held this position for about… a month and a half? I did enjoy my time in ISD, it was more recent than most, happening around December/November… it was in the midst of the ISD rework, and it was a reminder of the non-combat lifestyle after so long in Alpha-1. I enjoyed the simplicity of it all, small walks around, basic interactions, flagging people on FLC breaks, don’t tell my old Director (It was Remmy and Cade!), but I let most people off with a warning. If they generally weren’t harming anyone’s RP or being a danger to themselves, it was just a small telling off and a reminder to be more careful.

Oh, I am also the author of the worst order to ever grace Alpha-1… yes… I invented something called a Special Operation and enacted one on Alpha-1… one where I allowed Agents to take the disguise of Alpha-1 Enlisted… if you’ve ever heard that Alpha-1 is terrible for breaking the FLC, this is likely the source of that. This order meant that I completely dashed any fear ISD had of Alpha-1 and emboldened them to take action against them without issue, even for the smallest of things. It turned into a case of overpolicing where there ordre had to be shut down by Athena and she gave a blanket O5 order to tell anyone following Alpha-1 for more than 2 seconds to ‘fuck off’ as she put it. This is an O5 order that still stands today, though it's done less so. And to my regiment reading this… I’m so sorry for feeding you all to ISD… but it was good fun.

Thankfully, we’re almost done now. My second-to-last Jr. CL4 held is Exec. Researcher, and my God, this is a trip down memory lane. I’ve held it twice now, and quite frankly, I doubt a single one of you can even remember this. But my main claim to frame (Non-existent frame) is OCCBR, that’s the Organised Combat Chemical Branch of Research. It was actually… funny enough, first funded by Broda when he was on Site Director, it was my first interaction with him, and OCCBR did end up operational for about two months before my partner left and I got too high up the ranks in Nu-7 that I had to focus on it more and more. OCCBR had a scattering of documents, forms, price lists, and contacts all aimed towards making and supplying the Foundation with chemicals. We were good at it. I remember my first interaction with the Ethics Committee during this time was selling a litre of Class-E to ECM Phoenix, and that is a name that should be a throwback for some people. All of this was shortly after the chemical update came out, so we were the new kids on the block, and while it was all very fun and taught me a lot about the research department, it was a brief time.

I did also hold ECA at one point, but that was so long ago that I struggle to remember a single thing. The one thing of note I did was being a Senior Assistant (meaning I was trusted enough to approve things like 008 tests as an ECA), and being trained to host tribunals, but if you were to ask me to host one on the spot, I’d look at you like a fool. I’ll definitely need to catch up on that document.

Great, we’ve done… one section for why I’m the best candidate for the Ethics Committee… let’s move on to the next one, which is… love for the game

Yes, I’ve put a lot of thought into that goofy reason, but it has meaning behind it. I will begin this section by saying this… I am one of only two people (I believe) to have been given the rare opportunity of being able to play as an ECM before applying. This was not intentional, I had no plans to resign from Alpha-1 Commander until Rev told me he’d allow me to play ECM while Ethics had no one, what a twist of fate that was. I spent so much time designing my character that I quickly fell into a passion for the RP I could do as Miss Maria L. Penrose. It consumed hours so quickly that I lost track of days over the lore and everything attached to it, and as I focused more and more on CL5 RP and what Maria could generate, I realised I had lost the passion for Alpha-1 a long time ago… and it was only when I started looking at this role deeply that I figured it out. That comparison between what I put into ECM and what I put into Alpha-1 was a puddle vs the ocean.

I have fully intergated myself into the Ethics Committee, and while I acknowledge I currently have all the goods parts with none of the bad parts (OOC drama), I would also like to point out I see enough of the bad parts via SL, so its not as if that’ll break me any time soon.

From that, I point to what I’ve already done in my short time as ECM. The biggest achievement is the Museum, and for those unaware, it may seem like that has popped out of nowhere, and it has… literally… it took under 48 hours to build and design that entire thing. There is roughly 8K words baked into that, including all the props I built and set up, and then the behind-the-scenes stuff, yet it was my passion that pushed me forward at a massive pace. I have said this before, but I have always been a “strike while the iron is hot” type of person, and boy… was the iron hot. And while most of the RP has been done (Omega-1 know a little more, but you’re not gett leaks), there will still be more generated out of that specifically because of who Maria is as a character…

Let’s move to wrapping this section up, and I’ll pick one more reason why I’m the best candidate, and that’ll be… fun…

What a silly thing to say, a CL5 member should be professional and serious at all times, unprofessionalism should never- why is fun unprofessional? It isn’t, I’m arguing with myself here to make a point, but it does stand.

Ultimately, this is a game, and as a game, the primary reason we play it is for fun. Perhaps if I use the word ‘enjoyment’ it’ll come across as better, but what I enjoy, and what I hope most others enjoy, is interesting and interactive roleplay where people can easily slot their characters into the situation and add on. Sometimes that may be something simple like a basic “go-to this event dupe, shoot this man”, I’ve made plenty of those events as a GM, and I’ve even taken it a step further with more RP focused events, though I admit I gameify them, you can see that from my event list if you care to dig it up (Don’t ask Jeremy, he’ll mock me about something like a Factory, no idea what that is, and don’t ask him, please!).

But the point stands well, when thinking about RP, I think, how can others fit into this RP? This goes doubly for a CL5 member, as you have to consider Omega-1 and ECAs, as well as whoever will come along for the ride. It's what I did for my museum opening. I had Omega-1 hand out feedback forms, and anyone who rated low on information accuracy would be taken away for some 1984 RP, and I had assistants gather donations for the Pinewood Recovery Fund. Now of course, a bunch of on-the-spot fuck ups happened that barely any of that actually took place (Thank you clipboard system!), but the thing is I still planned for it, and Omega-1, as well as all the GOIs/Foundation personnel who came along also had fun.

I do truly believe this is the core of being… any leadership position holder, and that’s ensuring everyone enjoys the position they’re in. It won’t always happen; some people try out a spot and just end up not liking it, but in most cases, a guiding hand can help. It's something I learnt from my failure as Nu-7 LTCOM, we’re here for a good time, not a shouty do as you’re told time (though that is needed every so often).

What are the responsibilities of the Ethics Committee in RP?:
So many things to list, so little time to do so…

Basic Duties:

- Code black/nuke
- Conducting audits or supporting ISD in audits on their behalf
- AA and mass term auth
- Site-wide amnestication for the rare mega infobreaches we can’t contain with ISD/AO
- ECA/O1 tasking/health checks!
- Tribunals, both hosting and judging, all while ensuring it’s fair
- General FLC management
- ERT deployment
- Certain testing authorisation provided an exec+ can’t deal with it
- Upholding the illusion of weakness for the Ethics Committee (my fav)

Complex/rare Duties:

- Supervising ISD when issues arise that require EC oversight. Unlikely, but it does happen. This also includes supporting ISD when correctly enforcing the FLC, even if others don’t like it. ISD is one of the core tools of the EC, it must be supported when under threat or suffering from mismanagement.

- Ensuring the Council is properly monitored and continues to support the mission statement in a fair, logical manner, for the overall benefit of mankind.

- Making the hard decisions that would keep most up at night. Someone has to do it, and as long as the scale of cost vs benefit is balanced, it will be done no matter how… unethical it is. Ethics is not ethical, it is logical, and it would sacrifice half the planet to save the other half if there were no other option.

- Primary Action has to be listed here, the last resort, something to only be debated once all other options are exhausted. If the Council cannot see reason, if they ignore the EC’s every word and continue down a path of reckless endangerment, or selfish desire, then… as per the Administrator’s orders… we will need a new Council, one firmly realigned with both the Foundation and humanity’s survival.

- Assisting SA and other departments when needed, this is more focused towards being a middleman, helping to bring together departments and knock out any issues that have arisen. Keeping the Foundation running smoothly and stamping out any dissent.

- Ensuring the Foundation does not lose sight of its goal. The FLC is a big part of this, it exists to keep research on track and as wasteless as possible, ensuring that all resources are spent efficiently and that bureaucratic hold up never affects the real picture, and that personnel of the Foundation can be held accountable when they defy what we should all be working for; whether intentional, or due to negligence of ability.

What are the responsibilities of the Ethics Committee out of RP (e.g. what applications do they handle?):

Applications are very basic, let's bash them out first:

- ECA (vote in forums)
- ECM (vote in forums)
- Omega-1 COM and LTCOM sometimes (Depends on the state of O1)
- DOISD (And you guessed it, vote in forums)

If the above are successful, then either the ECC or an ECM will interview the applicant, and then if passed that they’ll give an orientation if ECA/DOISD. ECMs are for the big man, the ECC.

Other OOC responsibilities are generally very varied. In most cases, it's speaking with the Council on plans of action, keeping an eye on SA/Departments to make sure they’re ticking along nicely. Ensuring RP standards are met and that the gameplay loop of departments is open and running without issues.

Truthfully, it's a lot, and what you’ll be doing depends so much on the state of the server. You could end up micro-managing every department because a mass resignation occurred, and now you’re approving temp CL4s and speaking with SSLs. Or you could simply be keeping Ethics documents up to date and planning fun CL5 RP for the server so they can get a taste of the impactful stuff. There is so much here, and it really depends on how much you’re willing to take onto yourself…

But from just this, I hope you can see that I do understand this position, and I have no naive expectations about it. CL5 isn’t just a shiny keycard and some extra power, it's an example.

Anyways, we have lore to get onto: Lore!
