About SCP-27198 “The Gap That Learns”:
Object Class: Keter

Status: Partially Contained

Special Containment Procedures:

SCP-27198 cannot be physically or spatially contained, though the number of it's manifestations can be limited through observation of affected zones and suppressing public awareness. This makes the anomaly appear less frequently, as it can only interact with subjects that know of it's existance. Any rumours of a ritual that can make any wish come true are to be investigated and the individuals involved amnesticated.

Direct interaction with SCP-27198 is prohibited outside of approved experimental contexts. Personnel are instructed never to negotiate, bargain or acknowledge SCP-27198 as an entity.

Description:
SCP-27198 is a sapient entity that exists within gaps of perception, specifically moments where observation fails: sleep, blinking, distraction, unconscioussness. It is not a physical being and doesn't occupy space, it occupies the absence of attention.

SCP-27198 demonstrates intelligence, memory and the ability to learn behavioral patterns. Over time it adapts to it's victim and observers, tricking them and messing with their reality by altering sentimental items and memories associated with them. It is also capable of bargaining and has been observed making deals in exchange for various advantages. Recorded transactions include: Removal of terminal illness, prevention of disasters, births that should not have survived. Exchanges for these transactions include: Disappearance of a loved one, tragedy happening to a stranger, shorter lifespan.

Whenever a person makes a deal, they instantly become a victim and other than the agreed upon terms, they're being targetted by SCP-27198. It can latch onto multiple victims, but can only affect one at a time. It has been observed to latch onto people without consent or any deal, but it is extremely rare to do so. When unobserved gaps occur within SCP-27198's victim's conscioussness, the entity messes with them by removing, altering or eroding local reality. Objects affected are not destroyed; they were never fully present to begin with.

The anomaly hasn't been observed to appear with a physical body, but possibility of it appearing in such a way isn't ruled out. It usually communicates via paper that it creates when the victim isn't looking. The paper usually contains terms of the agreement or messages to the victim, written using the victim's handwriting and native language. The paper seems to be of traditional japanese origin, created from the fibers from the inner bark of the gampi tree, also known as Washi. The agreement is reached once the victim writes their signature, after which the paper disappears.

SCP-27198 usually appears on it's own to whoever learns of it's existance, but it can be summoned by a ritual. The ritual begins once the person summoning him falls asleep in a dark room with no one in it's proximity. It is unknown how far away the person has to be from civilisation, but the place where it occurs is usually an abandoned hut inside a forest. There were no recorded rituals performed inside a city and attempts of observation of such rituals areas proved hard, as the entity seemed to be aware of being observed, though limited success was made after hidden surveillance systems have been set up by people unaware by the entity, which showed corrupted, but recognisable footage. This footage couldn't be viewed in real time and showed static during the ritual. After 5-6 hours, the entity appears and the victim wakes up sat in a chair with an empty paper and an oil-based marker. When the victim writes what they want, the terms of the agreement appear after a blink. The victim is able to modify the agreement and communicate with SCP-27198 on the paper. If the victim doesn't agree to the terms, SCP-27198 latches onto them anyway and the victim wakes up in the same dark room, as if the encounter was nothing more than a dream.

(unknown to the foundation) how Rei attaches to the story:
Their mother made a deal with a being, which will later be known as SCP-27198 “The Gap That Learns”. After learning of potential complications, she exchanged her life for her child's life. Unbeknownst to her, that would make Rei be cursed. Their mother disappeared from existance and Rei ended up in a residential care home, where their life seemed normal until they reached the age of 13, when the entity appeared to them for the first time using a paper in their bedroom, in which the entity introduced itself as "A gap in their consciousness" and explained the circumstances of their birth. After they dismissed it as a prank, they angered the SCP which made them disappear from the consciousness of others and appear homeless on the streets.

After going back to their care home, no one recognised them and they had to leave. They spent 3 years on the streets, not being noticed by anyone and having no ID, or any other papers confirming their identity until the entity made a deal with them. It offered a return to normal life in exchange for a tragedy to happen in public to which they will be a witness. Rei agreed without a second thought. MTF Eta-10 has been sent to investigate the public tragedy which was anomalous in nature. After Rei was a witness to the tragedy and after they exhibited no fear and refused amnestication, they were personally recruited by an MTF Eta-10 Major as a new Eta-10 Private. The entity would later admit to them it wasn't it's direct intention, but treated it as it's part of the deal done.

They rose through the ranks fast, reaching the rank of Sergeant before being noticed by the Ethics Committee for their resilience, loyalty and stubborness. An incident, where they stood up to an order against the Foundation Legal Codex, was the most notable. After the officer has been reprimanded for the order, they decided to make a deeper dive into Rei, which resulted in them finding out their past has been barely touched. Investigations found only snippets of their past life, including some records of them in the residential home, cutting off at the age of 13. That is how they got their age as well. Other snippets include archival CCTV footage showing them wandering the streets.

The interactions with the SCP would make Rei paranoid and refuse to sleep, as well as being stubborn to disclose their past, as they do not want to risk angering the entity and the potential investigation and removal for being too risky to keep within the foundation structure. Their excuses range from forgetting, not treating it as an important matter or just straight-up refusal. The foundation resources treat it as them having a very traumatic past, further noted by information snippets found by them.
