CONNECTING…

CONNECTED — CAMERA FEED — TRAIN TO SITE 65 — TRAIN CAR 3

Camera pans to the left side of the car, showing a lone man sitting down, staring at a pocket watch held in his hand

The man’s hand grasped the pocket watch softly, with the gentle touch of a somber memory behind it. He pulled out a small case from his suit jacket, a maintenance kit held within. As he began his upkeep, his mind wandered, meandering around the person who had gifted it to him all those years ago, and who had set him off on the path he had been traveling for god knows how long.

Her face was little more than a blur at this point, the amnestics keeping her form hidden away from him. After all, the grief and confusion from it all had led to some of his best work yet. His understanding of SCP-096 rivaled one man’s, and their work together led to SCP-096 being contained in Site-65 after his colleague’s… mistake.
He hadn’t seen his old friend in a while, although he had heard whispers of what had happened to him. However, being employed with the Foundation for this long gives you a good sense of when to mind your business, so those rumors stayed as such, simple rumors.

Camera pans away from the man to the back of the car, where the door has slid open and another person has entered the car, walking towards the seated man

“Martin, we’re 10 minutes away. Once we arrive, we’ll be in their Heavy Containment. Your briefing and transfer overview should have gone over it already, but E-11 is a permanent fixture of their Site, so they’ll be greeting us upon our arrival.”, said the new arrival to the train car.

Martin looked at him as he sat down in the seat across from him, his former Site Director who decided to accompany Martin on his transfer to Site-65. They’d known each other for close to 30 years now, helped introduce him to her, was the best man at their wedding, brought him food when he sat by her bedside in her last days.
“Thanks, and thanks again for coming with me. I know you have a lot on your plate so it means a lot Jack. Me transferring isn’t ideal but Geoff has a good handle on things back home, even if he does have a screw or two loose.”, Martin said, chuckling as he finished his sentence. He shifted his attention back to his watch, putting his kit back together and storing it once again. Reaching to the seat next to him, he grabbed his briefcase, opened it and pulled out a manilla folder that read “Site-65 Transfer Briefing”. He rifled through it, before stopping on the page pertaining to the person he was replacing.

“Jack, have you read these? This Director, Morgan, their file’s been sealed. I get we’re not supposed to ask these kinds of questions, but do we know what I’m walking into with their disappearance?”
“As your former Site Director, I say don’t look into it. But as your colleague and friend, I can’t say I haven’t heard anything.”, Jack grinned before continuing. “I don’t know much, but there are rumors popping up here and there. It’s mostly the same old ‘Oh they defected’, but there’s one thing I’ve been hearing in the Administration mill. This Director was apparently working closely with them, and something either went very wrong or very right. My best advice is to keep what you know in mind and tread lightly.”

Martin nodded, before putting the file and folder back into the briefcase. He began twirling his ring, before continuing, “Site-65 seems to be all it’s cracked up to be, huh Jack? It’s certainly a risk transferring there, but I need to move forward.”, he paused for a second, his movement halting for a single moment, “Make sure to leave some flowers for her every week ok Jack? I don’t know if I’ll be able to find anywhere to do it at this place considering its history.”

An announcement blared over the intercom, signaling their arrival to Site-65. As the train slowed, the two men gathered their things, tidying themselves up from the long ride.
“I’ll keep her exactly as you left her, Martin. I do visit her you know, same as you. I just steer clear on your day, it’s more sacred to you than it is for me. What flowers would you like me to leave for her? I haven’t had to do it in almost 7 years now.”

“Orchids, her favorite were the purple ones.”

The train came to a stop, and the two walked over to the door as it began opening, Site-65 and it’s secrets beyond them.

My current character, Morgan Rentas, is set to be killed off soon, and this is the new character I'd like to play after they die. I'll be planning on writing more short stories detailing his past as I'd like to have this character around for a long while. I don't mind answering any questions, and feedback on my writing is welcome as long as it's constructive.
