What does this suggestion change/add/remove:
What it says on the tin; Limit AO wars to 1 life for both A1 and O1, alongside their respective assistants/O5's.

Alternatively, make AO wars guaranteed PK's for any personnel that die. But that's an extreme option.

Has something similar been suggested before? If so, why is your suggestion different?:
Not to my knowledge.

Possible Positives of the suggestion (At least 2):
1. AO wars will last significantly shorter, thereby giving the rest of the site much less disruption.
2. AO wars will have more weight as swift, decisive actions, rather than drawn-out conflicts, which means that tactics have significantly more importance and that ones' survival matters a lot more.

Possible Negatives of the suggestion:
AO has less long-lasting conflicts.

Based on the Positives & Negatives, why should this suggestion be accepted:
Look, it's well known that AO wars tend to... drag on a bit. Not to mention, they are usually accompanied by OOC announcements by (S)SL that if you're not AO you're not allowed to get involved. Meanwhile, everything else does get shut down.

Greatly shortening how long these situations last, I believe, will be preferable for the majority of the playerbase.

this just deflates anything possibly fun about an AO war, like it's a war it should have impact, not end in 2 seconds cause, this would just end in 2 seconds (woah really?) also just cuz ur current leadership doesn't have the measures to lock off & restrict a war cause its too disruptive, making a suggestion to add rules to limit it isn't gonna fix anything, its just going to massively demotivate even starting a war in the first place, i mean u have a bunch of RP tension between the two sides doing all these crazy stuff over a long period of time just for a at max 10 minute long conflict

why??

Current leadership can't control wars effectively sadly.
Firstly, an issue in the UK should not be forced to become an issue in the US. AO Leadership on the US server is able to limit and control the locations of these wars, along with stopping them quickly if needed. If the UK can't do that, then SSL should get involved, as the AO leadership should be able to do these things.

I know that in the US, a lot of people complain about crossfire, but these are the very same people who decide to walk right through an active fight or choose to steal weapons and keycards from the ground. We also tell everyone not to get involved via comms, and in the event that someone is trying to help us, we verbally tell them to stop.

The US also has a self-imposed set of rules that we follow, and if they are broken, the AO leadership punishes the people who broke the rules.

I will also point out that if we were to limit the war to one life per person, it will incentivize starting a war when there are little to no members of the other side online.

Also on the US who ever wins the first engagement is typically deiced by who ever shoots first. If AO wars are one life each then the more agressive side wins 9/10 without anyway to fight back.

If you guys had an RP focused server and AO it'd make sense to you, but you are insanely combat focused.

I find a single death to be too much and would result in something both too short and not interesting enough. They don't happen enough to be ended in 60 seconds.

That being said, a limitation on lives or something similar to push AO wars away from first person shooter team deathmatch into a more planned out structured combat would be something positive overall. CI raids (as much as I hate them) purposefully have one side that cannot respawn so that small damage to the team does slowly bring it down - if AO wars had something similar it would be good.

I think a person could reasonably argue 3 deaths and AO would still have fun.

If you were ever in an AO I woulda gave this actual thought. First, everything else does not get "Shut down", AO wars are usually limited to PW/EZ. Second, and I speak for the US AO as I have been in both, we DO have strategic decisions, we just don't yell it out in game (believe it or not!) so you usually don't see it. Last AO wars last for 30 minutes tops, and again are limited to PW/EZ. I also have been playing this server for 5 years, I have never experienced an AO war from the outside that severely harmed operations of other departments, SOP can spawn on surface, research can still do tests, gsd can still sit in dblock/patrol site. Half of the time its the other departments getting in the middle of the war and then complaining about it. If you ever get into an AO and have the same opinion ill think about considering your side.

reason for suggestion has merit, but not the way to fix it, AO wars are incredibly boring for everyone except for people involved the when they spill out, which I can't speak for the UK server but isn't common in the US server.

AO wars that end up in core are INCREDIBLY annoying, and should in reality cause furthered consequences because there is simply not accountability for them current. While I was in o1 a fair bit of time ago, I think I can say with experience from being in and out of them, they're fucking buns and absolutely should not be counted as a "key part of gameplay loops for AO".

I can't offer a solution myself, but in my opinion this is still not the right course of action, so I'll give it a neutral as it draws attention to a valid problem.

-support straight up just don't go to the area their fighting at it really isn't that hard. From what ive seen most AO wars happen in EZ not really disrupting any rp. You can still sample/test as a researcher, ETC I could go on but like just avoid the areas

i'm not sure how the UK does their AO wars but from what i've seen it's within FCOM's hands on how it is handled
USA's AO Wars are to last less than half an hour so that the server doesn't shit itself and even then there's always an RP reason behind it. AO Command's teams are ALWAYS putting in Comms "Hey, don't interfere with the war or else there will be consequence" which lead to people almost immediately ignoring it and going towards the gunfire anyway and us having ISD assist in blocking off certain areas so that there is less innocent people dying. i'm not saying that we're not totally responsible for the amount of crossfire deaths, but there's a point where it's just people being stupid and acting irrationally just because the two major MTF's are fighting.
just because some of y'all cant participate doesn't mean you guys have to take it away.
